Civic education broadly consists of the study and understanding of government, citizenship, laws, public policy. It must be comprehensive to teach students not only how our country is structured but also what they can do to get involved in their community. When a student understands these topics thoroughly they will have a deeper sense of responsibility which leads them to take action on important issues that happen around them such as voting or protesting against unfair policies. Civic literacy allows for an educated citizenry that actively participates in democracy.
Civic education is the process of teaching and learning about citizenship. It should encompass an understanding of how government functions, rights and responsibilities, methods for public engagement in civic life such as voting or volunteering to serve on a jury; and ethical principles that guide good behavior. The current lack of civic literacy among young people coupled with apathy towards politics has created a dangerous environment where individuals are not sufficiently equipped to participate meaningfully in their communities.
BEEN will also dive deep into the U.S. Military Industrial Complex and how America continues to maintain a bloated, imperialistic military presence at home and abroad.
We will analyze and discuss the Department of Defense and its 800+ foreign military bases, the national security state budget that routinely exceeds a trillion dollars annually. Our mechanized army, a navy built around aircraft carriers, or an air force that boasts of its global reach and global power, all of it created not for defense but for offense—for destruction, anytime, anywhere.
Understand the politics of climate change and the protection of natural habits. How U.S. could never address the urgent needs of the planet when the U.S. Military pollutes more than 140 countries combined.
America’s endless war games and wars are a key driver in catastrophic climate change.
- Civic knowledge and skills: where youth gain an understanding of the processes of government, prevalent political ideologies, civic and constitutional rights, presidential executive orders and the history and heritage of the above.
- Civic values and dispositions: where youth gain an appreciation for civil discourse, free speech, and engaging with those whose perspectives differ from their own.
- Civic behaviors: where students develop the civic agency and confidence to vote, volunteer, attend public meetings, and engage with their communities.
